Mas maganda pa ang cell phone ni Manong Guard sa akin. Colored, clamshell, at may cam pa yata, samantalang ang sa akin, black & white. Kahit si Kuyang magtataho o si Ateng nagtitinda ng turon at mga tinapay, may mga cell phone. Lahat na ay may cell phone – maykaya man o wala…
Kapag pumupunta ako ng mall, napakaraming tao. Nagsisiksikan sa mga hagdan at escalator. Walang maupuan sa food court. Nakapagtataka na sa Pilipinas, panlima sa mga pinakagutom na bansa sa daigdig, ay napakarami at naglalakihan ang mga malls na dinudumog naman ng mga Pilipino…
Dalawa lamang na scenario ito ng Philippine pop culture sa kasalukuyan. Unti-unti na akong namumulat sa kabalintunaan at kahungkagan ng malling, Friendster/Facebook/Multiply, cell phone, laptop, anime, chatting, gaming. Kapag nawala ang Internet connection, parang napakalaki ng nawala sa akin. Inis na inis ako at hindi ako makapagblog, makapagsurf, makapaglaro ng online games. Kapag nawala ang cable at hindi ako makapanood ng sinusubaybayan kong anime, nagwawala ako. Kapag wala rin akong hawak na cell phone, hindi ko malaman ang gagawin ko. Anong laking kahangalan talaga ang mga asta kong ito. Tunay na nakakahiya. Nawawala ako sa sarili ko kapag nawala ang mga kaluhuan ko – mga bagay na hindi naman kailangan, mga kaluhuan ko lang!
Tunay na napag-isip-isip ako. Nanonood ako ng anime. Libangan ko ito. Totoong naliligayahan ako. Sa loob ng 30 minuto, pumapasok ako sa mundo ng anime. Ngunit makaraan ang maikling panahong iyon, balik ako sa realidad. Balik ako sa katotohanang hindi ko pa tapos ang mga homework at papers ko, at di pa ako nakakapagrebyu para sa exam bukas. Ganoon din kapag nasa harap ng computer, nagse-surf, naglalaro ng online game, nakikipagchat. Pagkatapos ng sandaling paglilibang, balik ako sa malupit na realidad.
Dahil sa kulturang popular, may mga bagay na hindi naman kailangan ngunit binibili natin, mga lugar na hindi naman kailangang puntahan ngunit ating pinupuntahan, at may mga pag-uugali at pag-iisip na inuugali at iniisip natin na kung tutuusin ay hindi makatuwiran o irasyunal. Hindi naman tayo pinipilit o pinupuwersang gawin o tangkilikin subalit nais nating gawin o tangkilikin iyon. Halimbawa, minsan, humiling ako sa mga magulang ko na bumili ng laptop. Mayroon naman kaming desktop PC, pero gusto ko pang magka-laptop. Ang dahilan? Aaminin ko, inggit. Ang dami ko na kasing nakikitang kaeskwela ko na may laptop. Feeling ko, ako na lang ang wala. Naroon ang pakiramdam na naa-out-of-place ako, tingin ko’y napag-iiwanan ako. Tapos, parang ang mangmang ko pa, dahil kapag nakahawak ako ng laptop (hal., report at may kagrupo akong may laptop at ilalagay namin sa USB ang aming flash disks na laman ang aming ppt.), nako-conscious ako at di malaman ang gagawin. Hindi ako sanay magkontrol ng cursor ng laptop – iyong gamit lang ang daliri. Hiyang-hiya ako. Ngunit, tinanggihan ako ng aking mga magulang. Ano raw ba ang iniisip ko? May kompyuter na nga, gusto ko pa ng laptop. Ang luho ko! Noon, hindi ko naisip ang kaluhuan kong ito. Nanaig sa akin ang inggit at pagnanais na makiisa sa popular na kultura ng pagkakaroon ng laptop. Subalit ngayon, ngayong namumulat na ako, hindi na.
Wala namang masama sa pagnanais sa at pagkakaroon ng mga bagay na inihahain ng media at pop culture. May gamit din naman sila at may halaga. Ang hindi maganda ay ang labis-labis na paghahangad sa mga ito na nasa punto na ng pagkalimot at pagtalikod sa realidad. Oo, mapait ang katotohanan. Ngunit lalo pa itong papait kung lalo tayong malulunod sa ating mga pangangarap. Kapag mas matagal at malalim na kasi ang kapit natin sa isang bagay (hal., pangangarap) – oras na mawala/masira ito (kapag nabasag ang pangangarap dahil nagising na tayo sa katotohanan), mas masakit at mas malalim ang impact sa atin. Ang pakikilevel sa uring mas mataas ay hindi malulutas ang malupit na katotohanang ating kinakaharap. Ang ligaya sa pagpapantasya ay panandalian lamang, at babalik at babalik tayo sa masaklap na realidad.
